Approximately 30,000 dogs are euthanized in Cincinnati every year. Most of these dogs were adoptable...they just ran out of time.

Who We Are and What We Do?

Sheltered Paws Dog Rescue was established in 1997 in order to save shelter dogs that need a foster placement.

The reasons for fostering include:

  • Orphans too young for adoption
  • Nursing mothers
  • Mildly sick/injured dogs
  • Dogs that have been abused
  • Dogs that can not adjust to living in a shelter environment

Sheltered Paws Dog Rescue and a local shelter work together to place these dogs in temporary, loving foster homes. When you adopt from us, you are helping to save a shelter dog!!

Our Mission

To develop trust and love with a dog that needs to be reminded that many humans can and will take good, loving care of it for the rest of its lives. To then find loving homes for these previously abused, abandoned, sick, neglected and confused dogs. To give the dog a solid re-start with behavior, health, and trust. To spay/neuter our rescued dogs of age to stop the cycle of unwanted litters.

The Okinawan-American Animal Rescue Society works to rescue and pamper abandoned, mistreated, or lost animals in Okinawa, Japan. OAARS has been featured in several times in the media, including the Stars and Stripes newspaper, This Week in Okinawa, Japan Update, and the Marine Corps website. OAARS has aided many animals in finding a good home. A large portion of OAARS' members foster a pet and donate a substantial amount of their time to bettering the lives of abused and lonely animals. In 2006, OAARS opened a much needed shelter on Okinawa, there are approximately 38 animals being housed there. Volunteers go to the shelter daily to care for these animals, a total of 65 more animals, cats and dogs, are presently with foster families. OAARS is a non-profit organization approved by military commands in the Okinawa area. It was established as a formal organization in July 2004. It is a new and blossoming organization that has already accomplished a great deal to improve animal welfare.

Why does OAARS help?

Only ten percent of the animals that are brought to local Okinawa animal protection centers survive. Unfortunately, these animals are only given five days to live. Cats are even less likely to live; they are tightly packed in four foot cages. In 2005, almost 12,000, dogs and cats were taken to a local Okinawa Animal Center, also known as OZATO. Although a few are lost pets that are reunited with their owner, many are eventually killed. There are few opportunities for these animals to lead a happy life after their owners have abandoned them. Despite these depressing facts, many military families moving from Okinawa leave their pets behind to face these consequences. OAARS was instrumental in making microchipping mandatory for anyone using services at the military veterinary clinic. OAARS also hopes to reduce the amount of feral and homeless animals by continuing spay/neuter campaigns. While fighting for these issues, OAARS will continue to help animals in need. OAARS believes the question is not "why do we help...The question is, how could we not?

The Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (spcaLA) was founded in 1877 and is the first organization to promote animal welfare in Southern California. Originally chartered to end the abuse of horses used in travel during the "buggy" days, the organization expanded to include child abuse cases and then pet abuse cases.

Our 60 staff members and 450 volunteers are dedicated to our mission to instill respect and appreciation for all living things; to promote humane and anti-violence education; to protect animals against violence (often a precursor to violence against people); to provide for the well-being of animals that are injured, ill, abused, or otherwise in need; and to promote a bond of mutual assistance between people and animals.

As a nonprofit, independently chartered organization, it is not affiliated with any other "SPCA" or humane society. spcaLA does not receive funding to support its humane programs from any government agency. Financial support for the organization's programs is provided by donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
